About Home Espresso

We're an independent editorial site covering home espresso — machines, grinders, accessories, and beans. The category sells $200 portafilters next to $4,000 prosumer machines next to $40 manual lever makers, and most of the "best of" content online glosses over the question that actually matters: what kind of espresso are you trying to make at home, and what's the minimum kit that gets you there?

Our methodology

Every roundup and review on this site is built from four sources:

  1. Manufacturer spec sheets — boiler type and size, pump pressure and PID control, group head specs, water reservoir size, warranty terms, available portafilter sizes. We list these verbatim so you can compare apples to apples.
  2. Home-Barista and r/espresso threads — long-term ownership feedback from the community that owns this gear and services it themselves. We pay attention to the patterns that recur: which machines develop scale issues, which grinders lose burr alignment, which brands ship replacement parts cheaply.
  3. Verified-purchase reviews across Amazon, Whole Latte Love, Clive Coffee, and Seattle Coffee Gear — weighted for recency and filtered for the patterns that recur across hundreds of buyers rather than individual outliers.
  4. Cafe owner / barista interviews when relevant for higher-end machines (Lelit, Profitec, ECM, La Marzocco). The people who service these machines weekly know which ones come back.

What we don't do

We don't accept product samples in exchange for coverage. It changes how you write whether you mean it to or not, and the math doesn't work out for us long-term.

We don't publish "sponsored" reviews disguised as editorial picks. If we feature a product, we got there through research — never through payment from the manufacturer or retailer.

We don't quote live prices in our content. Espresso machine prices fluctuate constantly with seasonal sales and currency shifts on Italian-made gear. Every "Check price" link on this site routes to the retailer's current listing so you see the real number at the moment you click.

How we make money

Most outbound product links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and end up buying, the retailer pays us a small commission at no additional cost to you. That commission funds the research hours behind every piece on this site.

You can read the full disclosure on our affiliate disclosure page.
